Therapeutic Poetry

I Prize

Prize winning poem of the World Poetry Day contest

Nirosha Abdul Malik

I B.SC, Psychology

For some a poem may seem to be creepy,

But little do they realize the underlying therapy.

True that it consists of mere words put together,

But do you realize that it can give you feather?

Feather to fly,

high in the sky,

With no sigh,

And zero wry.

A poem might seem like a random person’s blabber,

But for the wise, it’s like a navigator for a sailor.

At times a poem is like a funny baboon,

And at times, like shade in a sunny noon.

It heals you,

And peels you,

Peels you off, from your insecurities,

Makes you kneel, towards your priorities.

Do you still think a poem is creepy?

Well, you better realize it’s an underlying therapy!

II Prize

Prize winning poem of the World Poetry Day contest

Mariam Adhila H II B. Sc Microbiology

With words both harsh and kind,

a medicine to the suffocated mind.

Wordsworth describes birds and bees,

Words worthy of putting us at ease.

A comfort to hearts that are hurt,

Choice of words that aren’t absurd

Damaged lives, that can relate,

To release anguish? This is a gate.

Stories of sorrow, from far and wide,

Soothing words, eternally by their side.

Doctors heal bodies,

Poets heal souls.

A few woeful melodies,

Sometimes assisting goals.

To write or not to write?

May always be a question.

But write to remove fright,

My heartfelt suggestion.

For some, their cure may be a cup of tea,

For me? My cure is therapeutic poetry.

Come on! Come on!

Sitting for a while

under the tree, a mile

away from tension

Acquiring everyone’s attention

Closing the wind

Opening the heart

Come, find

Read a part

Poem! For the cure

of headache,

Like a paracetamol!

Drowsiness of alcohol

Gives to you the poem.

Poem is a medicine for all.

Poem, that flows into the soul like a wind,

And cleans up the dirt that struck in mind.

No one to hear the distress,

But poem stood to express.

With a flick poem gave her bliss.

But, this clicked in no one’s mind.

Her pen flows like waterfalls,

When she bursts with poetry.

Nothing made it happen,

But only her poem.

She found her best medicine,

To heal the wound in her heart,

Nothing made it happen,

But only her poem.

Poem flowed into the deep down,

She found herself healed and strong.

Nothing made it happen

But one and only her poem,

With her, for her, now and forever.

M. Shajitha Sulthana

I BA English, ‘A’ Sec

Aromatic smell of plants is pleasant

But the buttery words are like crescent

Green tea gives freshness,

But poem gives refreshness.

Meditation soothens the mind

But poem soothens the soul.

Essential oil gives beauty

But poem delights our mind.

High medicinal values have neem

But poem is human’s beam

Medicine has to be extracted from the leaves

But poem extracts men’s feelings,

Medicines are bitter in taste

Poems are better to read

Ayurveda is the old method

Poetic Veda is the soul’s subject

Soothen your mind with its words

Reduce your tension with its lyric

Fill your heart with its theme

Poem! Letters of magic

Magical words.
